Phase II: The Architect
Phase II: The Architect
Duration: Weeks 2–4 | Points: 125 Design your workspace and research foundation
Learning Objectives
By the end of Phase II, you will:
- Build a professional GitHub profile with a profile README
- Confirm all required software is installed and working
- Structure your digital workspace (Obsidian vault) for the semester
- Identify and evaluate media archives as potential data sources
- Meet with a SIUE librarian to explore database options
Phase II Overview
As an architect designs blueprints before construction, you design your research infrastructure. This phase runs concurrently with Phase I — while you’re reading and reflecting, you’re also setting up the tools you’ll use all semester and scouting your data source.
Assignments
GitHub Profile (25 pts) — Week 1
Create a professional GitHub account with:
- A professional username and profile photo
- A profile README introducing yourself and your research interests
Syllabus Contract (25 pts) — Week 2
Open the syllabus contract template in RStudio, fill in the acknowledgment fields, and render it to PDF. This confirms your software (R, RStudio, Quarto) is installed and working.
Project Setup (25 pts) — Week 3
Initialize your Methods Vault as a GitHub repository and push it to GitHub. This proves Obsidian, GitHub, and git all work together.
- Open GitHub Desktop and create a new repository from your Methods Vault folder
- Make an initial commit (“Initial vault setup”)
- Publish the repository to GitHub (public)
- Submit your repository URL to Blackboard
From this point forward, you will commit and push your journal entries each week using GitHub Desktop — building a git habit before R enters the picture.
Librarian Visit Report (50 pts) — Week 4
Meet with a SIUE librarian to identify and evaluate a data archive for your research project. Write a report documenting:
- The archive — Name, type, scope
- What you learned — Date range, searchability, export options
- Feasibility — Can this source answer your research questions?
- Librarian consultation — What did the librarian recommend?
